Dear Yogis,
It is five weeks since I broke my leg. The first two weeks I was in the hospital and didn’t do much except watch movies and practice my German with roommates, doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel. But since I came home I have been able to go back to teaching and slowly I have been able to practice a little with the class. I can still not put weight on my leg, but I can do all seated poses and most reclined poses. It is surprising how many poses you can do that do not exert weight on the legs. My dear friend and fellow yoga teacher, Karin Eisen (www.karineisen.com) used to say that there are many poses that have the same form but have different relationships to gravity. Bridge, bow and camel poses are great examples, I feel. Since bridge pose puts too much pressure on my leg I feel a lot more comfortable doing camel pose (bow is not my favorite yet since the stitches on my ankle are not completely healed). They both have the same benefits and I get my backbend in. I feel physically and mentally so much better since I started to move my body again- just a full body stretch and a twist can change the outlook of the day. So please let me know if you have physical issues for which you can not do certain poses, together we can come up with poses that you can do!
